It was quite fitting that Thursday was World Book Day when I got to spend most of last week being paid to read and occasionally answer the telephone. I managed to finish off The Third Man, Anna K., Moby D. and get 400 or so pages into Middlemarch. I have to say that I was very disappointed by the tale of the aforementioned whale. Why did no one warn me (and by no one I mean my mother) that it is a very dull read all about whaling terminology and 101 things to do with blubber. The blinking chase isn’t until the last thirty or so pages! But, I guess that my soul is feeling all the better for finishing them off and I am now left craving a nice juicy mystery novel to even out all the high brow twaddle.

In honour of WBD, and if I had been more organised it would have appeared on the right day, here are my top seven books (in no particular order of preference).

  1. Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
  2. Persuasion by Jane Austen
  3. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
  4. The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
  5. The Quiet American by Graham Greene
  6. Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux
  7. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh

Earlier in the week Claire was asked to pick which work of fiction she would like to suddenly discover to be true. As much as I really want to go through the wardrobe, I would have to pick Cold Comfort Farm as Flora Post is my type of heroine.

Rather than pack my suitcase for the trip back to London, I shall tell you about the eight pop culture events that I am looking forward to in the coming months.

  1. Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith (it is not sad that I have been waiting nearly 20 years for this)
  2. Batman Begins – Chris Nolan (good), Michael Caine (v good) and Christian Bale (v v good)
  3. HBO’s new series Rome
  4. The new Harry Potter film and book
  5. The Interpreter – girl loves a thriller
  6. Kingdom of Heaven – Ridley Scott, need I say more
  7. Mr and Mrs Smith – girl loves an action flick
  8. Anything on PBS Masterpiece Theatre and Mysteries, the new series of MI5 on A&E

I am rejecting resolutions or objectives (a little too UN), for a gentler lexis choice.

  1. Charity: give more, that is once I have got myself a new job.
  2. Faith: the bible, so what’s it all about?
  3. Intellect: a book per week, and at least one Shakespeare play and something non-fiction per month.
  4. Health: more tennis, yoga and perhaps a handstand.
  5. Frugality: set up magazine subscriptions.
  6. Historical: broader understanding of British Kings & Queens and world history (gulp).
  7. Frivolity: begin Doctor Who prep.
  8. Consumption: contraction in sugar and extension in fruit consumption.
  9. Abstinence: just a soda and lime for me.
