liberated from the libretto

I left the operatic adaptation of Lysistrata at the interval. It just wasn’t funny. It had been sanitised, all the crude and satirical jokes removed. Given today’s political climate they could have had a lot of fun. There wasn’t even a Greek chorus (come on even Gilbert and Sullivan get a full on chorus). In my defence I am not a complete purist, I loved Stephen Sondheim’s Frogs. It was updated, but kept the feel of the original text (and I know shouldn’t really compare musicals with opera or opera lite).
