Both Empire and Cinescape are reporting (so it must be true) that a sequel for Brit horror flick 28 Days Later is in the works. Although, Danny Boyle is not slatted to direct it, he and Garland will have some involvement. Hopefully the concept will not be spoilt by too much money or Hollywood intervention. It would be great if the surviving stars would be attached to it but does it pick up from the optimistic North American ending or the British one???

I am not big on the whole zombie horror genre, but I do ‘enjoy’ films that make you feel uncomfortable and this is definitely one of them. I was left weighing up the fear caused by the mutated human shells against the strung out soldiers – both groups displaying base characteristics… chilled me to the bone and I checked the wardrobe for boogie men upon my return!

My wife loved 28 Days Later. So she’ll be glad. I hope the cast is back. I’ve never been a fan of sequals in name only. It seems to me the crassest breed of commercialism. Without the Boyle I’m less optimistic about the movie.

  2. In my humble opinion, 28 Days Later doesn’t need a sequel. In any case, where would the story go? The characters make a swim for it?

There’s a darned good reason why apocalyptic drama tends not to attract sequels…

    Sequels are a tricky matter – for every T2 there’s a Lethal 4……

I am quite partial to the unknown – what was in the suitcase, did Mr Orange die and what did Bill Murray whisper in Scarlett’s ear??????

What could happen in a sequel, maybe the survival of humanity or its obliteration, perhaps it could stray into Jeff Noon territory with half human half zombie people…..just as long as it doesn’t turn into ‘Reign of Fire’.

  5. But isn’t half the fun that they leave things unsaid for people to argue about afterwards or online?

it doesn’t really matter *what* was in the suitcase, and what Bill whispered to Scarlett. But it provokes us all to thinking about it, and what we’d have said to Scarlett. “Put on some pants” probably. Or “It doesn’t get any better. Sorry.”

Yup – it is far more fun having a heated debate afterwards or trying to unravel things ourselves than have everything laid before us in easy to swallow pieces.
